Evaluation of Griffolyn Corrosion Intercept

Background: Boris Miksic submitted two small samples of a 3-ply reinforced plastic laminate for evaluation of corrosion protection properties. The material, Corrosion Intercept, is manufactured by Griffolyn (a division of Reef Industries, Inc., in Houston, Texas). The company claims that Corrosion Intercept provides multimetal protection, protection from airborne gases and achieves very high barrier properties. They also claim that this material’s protection abilities are unaffected by climatic conditions.

Purpose: Evaluate the corrosion protection abilities of the Corrosion Intercept material.

Methods: Razor Blade Test

SO2 Test

ASTM D 1748 (Humidity chamber)

Materials: Razor Blade Test Kit

SO2 Test Kit

Procedure: The above tests were performed according to standard procedures for each. Carbon steel panels were cut into smaller panels for the SO2 and humidity tests, and the panels were sealed inside of the film using a heat sealer.

Grades 3 and 4 are passing

  1. Grade 0 - Extensive corrosion covering 25% or more of panel surface
  2. Grade 1 - Moderate corrosion covering 10-25% of panel surface
  3. Grade 2 - Slight corrosion 5-10% of panel surface
  4. Grade 3 - Very slight corrosion 0-5% of panel surface
  5. Grade 4 - No visible corrosion on panel surface

Conclusions: According to the test results above:

1. The Griffolyn Corrosion Intercept material does not provide multimetal corrosion protection (see Razor Blade Test for carbon steel and copper). Note: Corrosion formed on the Intercept film and on the carbon steel panels in the presence of water at room temperature (see attached photos).

  1. The Intercept material does not provide corrosion protection in a sulfur dioxide environment.
  2. The film’s ability to provide corrosion protection is affected by climatic conditions (see ASTM D 1748 Humidity Test).
