Evaluation of Film from Calliburn Industries

Evaluation of Film from Calliburn Industries

Background: There is interest in the corrosion protection offered by film from Calliburn Industries.

Purpose: Evaluate corrosion protection offered by Calliburn film.

Method: FT-IR Spectroscopy

Razor Blade Test

SO2 Test

VIA Test

Tensile Test

Materials: Paragon 1000 FT-IR, Perkin Elmer

Razor Blade Test Kit

SO2 Test Kit

VIA Test Kit

Calliburn film (blue in color, 4.0 mil)

Cortec VpCI™-126 film

Universal testing system, Instron 4443

Procedure: The above tests were performed according to standard procedures for each.

Results:

FT-IR Spectroscopy: Spectrum contains peaks corresponding to carboxylic acid derivatives (most likely sodium benzoate) and a possible triazole — based compound.

VIA Grades (Grade 2 or 3 are passing):

Grade 0- No corrosion inhibiting effect

Grade 1- Minute corrosion inhibiting effect

Grade 2- Medium corrosion inhibiting effect

Grade 3- Good corrosion inhibiting effect

SO2 Grades (Grade 3 and 4 are passing):

Grade 0- Extensive corrosion covering 25% or more of panel surface

Grade 1- Moderate corrosion covering 10-25% of panel surface

Grade 2- Slight corrosion covering 5-10% of panel surface

Grade 3- Very slight corrosion covering 0-5% of panel surface

Grade 4- No visible corrosion on panel surface

Conclusion:

    1. The Calliburn film does not provide any vapor corrosion protection and provides very limited contact corrosion protection for steel (see VIA and Razor Blade Tests results).
    2. Corrosion inhibitors in the Calliburn film are not acting as vapor corrosion inhibitors for steel and more recognized as very mild contact inhibitors. To provide sufficient corrosion protection these inhibitors should be used in combination with other chemical compounds.
    3. The Calliburn film has a poor quality, especially the tear strength and seal on the bags
