New Water-based Primer For Rusty Surfaces

Cortec's VCI CorrVerterTM brings environmentally friendly, water-base primers to a new level of convenience and cost savings. The new primer is especially formulated for application over rusty or poorly prepared steel surfaces to stop corrosion while offering an excellent primer for top coating. The product eliminates labor intensive operations for metal prep in maintenance, industrial and marine environments.

When applied, the two-in-one combination rust converter and paint primer actually penetrates rust. It goes down to the bare metal and converts rust to into a passive layer. As the rust is converted, VCI CorrVerterTM forms a high solid, water-borne latex coating. This tough coating provides low water vapor permeability to protect against re-rusting.

Unlike traditional converter/primers, Cortec's VCI CorrVerterTM has a very low VOC. It is non-flammable, non-combustible, and non-toxic which allows its application in a variety of environments with greater ease and safety. Because VCI CorrVerterTM does not contain phosphoric or tannic acid normally found in traditional converter/primers, it allows the user to choose from the greatest variety of top coatings including oil, solvent, water-based, latex, acrylic, urethanes and epoxies.

VCI CorrVerterTM can be used in situations where proper cleaning or sandblasting is difficult. When possible, the user simply removes any loose rust with a wire brush and then cleans the surface high pressure water spray. This simple surface preparation method is especially advantageous for salt-water marine applications where proper surface preparation is difficult or not possible. In very hard-to-reach areas, simply wash off excess salt from the steel surfaces with a high pressure water spray.

For application, the metal surface can be dry or damp. VCI CorrVerterTM is then easily applied by brush, roll or spray. After air drying for 8 to 12 hours, a top coat can be applied.

Thick Bodied Topical Treatment Knocks Out Rebar Corrosion

Cortec's MCI-2020 is now offered in a thick-bodied version especially for vertical surfaces and wind-exposed horizontal environments such as bridges. The patented MCI® Migrating Corrosion InhibitorTM is applied to existing concrete structures to reduce the corrosion of rebar and metal mesh embedded in the concrete structure. The more viscous version minimizes flowdown on walls and misting on bridges from wind. The thicker layer of MCI-2020 allows application in one-coat rather than two coats.

MCI-2020 is especially formulated for use in environmentally sensitive areas. Its water-based formulation does not contain calcium nitrite and is non-toxic, non-flammable, organic, and safe to handle. The product can be easily applied by spray, roller, squeegee or brush to any concrete surface for the most convenient and cost-effective application. MCI-2020 dries quickly. For bridge applications, traffic can be resumed in less than 30 minutes after treatment.

Proven effective in the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) funded by the Federal government and state DOTs, the product migrates through the densest concrete structures to seek out steel rebar and wire mesh to stop further corrosion. MCI-2020 functions independently of chloride levels and is effective in high chloride concrete structures with active corrosion being present.

Studies indicate that MCI-2020 is up to 50% more effective than polymer modified concrete and can extend the service life of some structures, such as bridge deck overlays, by as much as 34 years. The product can be used for all types of reinforced, precast, prestressed, post-tensioned and marine concrete structures. Users can repair or restore bridges, parking decks, piers, foundations, offshore platforms, and other reinforced concrete commercial and civil engineered structures. Cortec® MCI-2020 offers one of the easiest methods to incorporate in a simple preventive maintenance program against catastrophic failure from metal corrosion in concrete.

Extreme Pressure Moly Lube For High Friction Applications

A new extreme pressure lubricant has been specially formulated with molybdenum disulfide for heavy load and high friction applications. Available in a handy-to-use aerosol spray, Rawn America Moly Lube puts down a very slippery, fine lubricating layer with tremendous load bearing capability. It provides far superior lubrication to oils, greases, and silicones.

Immediately after applying Rawn America Moly Lube, metal surfaces achieve an extremely low co-efficient of friction without the need for rub-in or burnishing. Rough Shaves Don't Cut It Anymore

The packaging industry estimates that shipping with toxic, non-recyclable packaging has totaled over 10 billion dollars in fines to manufacturers. Those who continue to ignore the new environmental restrictions with ecologically unacceptable packaging face rough fines and "take-it-back" laws.  As world markets open and distribution is restricted by new imposed recycling laws, flexible packaging will have to meet new environmental sanctions of an expanding global marketplace. Producer responsibility demands, nationally and Internationally, will necessitate adopting new packaging alternatives with safe technology that is affordable and environmentally acceptable.

A recent independent laboratory testanalyzed the corrosion inhibiting features of different brand name plastic films and papers for packaging. Referred to as the Razor Blade test, which measures visible signs of corrosion, each metal sample was given a pass or fail according to specific test parameters. After reviewing the test results, the laboratory affirmed that wrapping metals, such as value-added parts for the automotive or telecommunication's industry, in films and papers with old toxic nitrite technology, is both harmful to humans and the environment. Traditional corrosion protection has been around for years, but today's stricter environmental laws and new safer technologies demand a solution that cuts two ways, performance wise and environmentally.

Test Background:
Copper, galvanized steel, and carbon steel were used as sample metals in a test group that included 12 different plastic and paper films. The factor that makes this test remarkable is the metal samples being observed and measured for corrosion never come in direct physical contact with the VCI compounds that are actually providing the protection. That's because VCI chemistry is transmitted through a vapor phase transport mechanism that volatizes in the air.

The test required samples that were impregnated with VCI compounds. There were several VCI compounds being used, traditional compounds that contain toxic nitrites, and new water-based VCI technology from Cortec Corporation without harmful environmental side effects. The methodology employed used sample test groups with freshly exposed metal surfaces that were sanded, pre-cleaned, and washed with methanol and then dried. Two drops of ionized water were placed on each sample. Then they were covered, without touching the metal, with a piece of VCI treated test material. An additional control sample was covered with a low-density polyethylene only.

The treated and covered samples were stored at ambient temperatures for 4 hours and then inspected. Most of the paper samples exemplified a consistent ability to protect metal parts from corrosive elements. The protective properties in most plastic films proved unsuccessful as a corrosion treatment, indicating a varied response. Some films offered some protection for one particular metal, others showed virtually no protection for one metal and more protection for another. Cortec's VCI papers and film provided the most complete protection on all metals. Cortec's VCIs revealed the least amount of discoloration and degradation as measured by the test results.
