NEW PRODUCT RELEASE
Epoxy Rebar Coating Replaced with Water-based MCI® Polymer
Cortec® Research Chemists have developed an alternative to costly epoxy rebar coating. The new polymer coating is based upon Cortec's patented MCI® and VpCITM technology utilizing non-toxic, water-based chemistries. The environmentally friendly formulation is fully biodegradable, making
application in the field easy and environmentally sound. No special safety precautions or clean-up is required. The product can be applied to rebar with conventional spray, brush, rollers or immersion.
Unlike the rebar coating developed twenty (20) years ago with epoxy which hardened, cracked and exposed rebar to corrosion, the Cortec MCI Rebar Coating provides a semi-soft film which is
self-healing. It provides unique barrier properties to aggressive outside environments and offers Cortec's Migratory Corrosion InhibitingTM action to maximize rebar protection in the event of
bending, scratches, or other surface imperfections. In aggressive ASTM D1748 testing, the Cortec MCI Rebar Coating provided over 1000 hours of protection, the equivalent of two years exposure to
hostile outside environments.
The MCI coating does not need to be removed before rebar is embedded into concrete. While the
coating does not affect adhesion of the concrete to the rebar, it substantially boosts the corrosion protection of the metal. This added capability makes it especially effective for bridges, decks,
garages, buildings and lanais. These structures are subject to heavy corrosive attack from chlorides in coastal environments and de-icing in winter conditions. Without adequate protection against such
harsh conditions, corrosion destroys 75% of the planned life of a concrete structure. Cortec MCI Rebar Coating fights against premature rebuilding, maintenance or demolition.
MCI Rebar Coating is available in standard colors as well as clear coat. It can be applied at the steel
mill and service center for up to five (5) years indoor protection. The coating will provide up to two (2) years outdoor protection when applied in the field. If required, the coating can be removed by
heavy duty alkaline cleaners.
