Case History Spotlight #628: Corrosion Protection of Cased Pipeline Crossing

Two cased pipeline crossings in Saudi Arabia were targeted for cleaning and corrosion protection. Over time, the annular space between the casing and the fuel oil pipeline had been filled with moisture, mud, and debris, creating a harsh environment. New vents, reducers, and end seals were installed. The casings were flushed twice with VpCI®-649 BD treated water—the first time with 30 minutes of circulation and the second time until the water turned from reddish brown to yellowish white. The water was suctioned out and the casing pressure-tested before workers pumped the two parts of CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler into the vent. Corrosion electrical resistance probes were installed for future monitoring. This method was viewed as a cost-saving means for extending the service life of the pipeline crossings and has been used by major pipeline companies in both North America and the Middle East.
