Case History Spotlight #628: Protecting Cased Pipeline Crossings

February 13, 2024

Protecting Cased Pipeline Crossings Two cased pipeline crossings in the Middle East needed protection against corrosion inside the annular space between the carrier pipeline and the casing. This area was a catchpoint for moisture and debris that could accelerate corrosion and threaten pipeline integrity.

After installing new vents, reducers, and end seals, workers flushed the casings out twice with VpCI®-649 BD treated water. Water was suctioned out, and the casing was pressure tested. Finally, CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler Part A and Part B were pumped into the casing to fill the annular space with a gel containing a high dose of Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors. Electrical resistance probes were installed for future corrosion monitoring.

The treatment was considered an effective and cost-saving means of protecting and extending the service life of these two cased pipeline crossings. This approach has now been used both in North America and Saudi Arabia.
