Get to the Bottom of Your Sludge Problem with BIOBOOSTER SR™
January 2, 2025
Industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities that rely on lagoon treatment face big problems when it comes to sludge buildup. Is there any way to keep sludge and its complications in check without hiring a high-cost dredging company to remove it? Bionetix® has created a simple solution that literally gets to the bottom of this lagoon problem with BIOBOOSTER SR™, bio-enzymatic tablets that basically “eat” sludge so there is less to remove.

What’s the Matter with Sludge?
Sludge—the solid material that settles at the bottom of lagoons—builds up over time and takes away valuable treatment space. It can also cause bad odors and lower oxygen levels, which slow down wastewater treatment and encourage algae growth. While sludge can be removed, dredging is costly, and disposal is another challenge, making it ideal to avoid sludge accumulation altogether.
How Can I Reduce Sludge in Wastewater?
BIOBOOSTER SR™ helps control sludge naturally by using bacteria and enzymes that digest organic waste. These helpful microbes and enzymes—such as those that break down grease, starch, and fibers— work together to convert solid waste into simpler, harmless materials. The tablets sink to the bottom, where sludge usually builds up, and release their active ingredients slowly over time to keep the process going. The formulation’s slow-release matrix ensures sustained microbial and enzymatic activity at the lagoon bottom. Facultative microorganisms continue degrading sludge even under oxygen-limited conditions, promoting denitrification and improved nutrient balance in the water column.
Do I Need a Shock Dose or Maintenance Dose?
Dosage of BIOBOOSTER SR™ varies from industry to industry and depends on sludge volume, sludge rate accumulation, and temperature. Typically, if sludge has already become a problem, a shock dose of five to seven pails of BIOBOOSTER SR™ should be added per 1,000 m2 of pond volume, followed by a two-and-a-half to four pail maintenance dose every one to three months. If sludge has not yet accumulated significantly, a maintenance dose can help keep the problem from getting out of hand.
An Easy Cost-Benefit Analysis
Instead of paying hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars for sludge removal, letting bacteria and enzymes “eat” the sludge in advance is a clearly more attractive option. If you are looking for ways to cut costs, reduce odors, and generally improve your lagoon wastewater treatment efficiency, be sure to give BIOBOOSTER SR™ a try.
