Meeting Data Center Demand with Corrosion Prevention in Global Shipping

February 10, 2026

The next four years are expected to see data center demand triple, with trillions of dollars invested and more than $52 billion going toward 2026 construction projects alone. An obvious consequence is increased demand for new chillers, servers, and related components, a growth Cortec® has witnessed firsthand as more clients seek corrosion solutions on assets destined for new data centers. What stands between successful shipment and delivery is the journey through harsh climates and uncontrollable weather that too often leaves new equipment corroded before it arrives. Delays are also common for infrastructure projects, exposing components to outdoor elements during extended onsite storage. The consequences are much more difficult to remedy once the damage is done. Fortunately, several manufacturers have discovered that corrosion prevention is simple with the right packaging solutions.

Data Center 1 - Cortec Corporation

Shipping Giant Chillers Corrosion-Free

Long before the AI boom, one chiller manufacturer noticed customer complaints about cosmetic corrosion and turned to Cortec® for a rapid packaging solution. They started wrapping the giant chillers in a custom color of VpCI®-126 HP UV Shrink Film and soon reduced packaging costs, liability, and complaints. Years later, they continued using the same UV resistant, Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor shrink film, recently increasing order quantity along with growing demand. A few years ago, they decided to add Boiler Dragonto the equation, fogging it into chiller tubing for internal protection that allows for easy startup once the chillers are installed.

Eliminating Server Rack Corrosion

Five years ago, Cortec® worked alongside another manufacturer to solve a problem with corrosion during shipping and storage of server racks. Together, they developed a custom VpCI®-126 bag that covered the entire rack and was supplemented with VpCI®-132 foam pads for an extra dose of Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors within the package. This halted the corrosion problem and led the manufacturer to specify only Cortec® products for this packaging process.

Achieving Dual Corrosion + ESD Protection

With electronics at the core of data center activity, static damage is another concern that arises along certain points in the supply chain. For these applications,  Cortec® offers several two-in-one packaging options that combine corrosion protection with ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection. EcoSonic® VpCI®-125 HP Permanent ESD Film and Bags contain a permanent static-dissipative agent for longterm ESD protection alongside Cortec’s standard Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors for individual item packaging. EcoSonic® VpCI®-125 HP Permanent ESD Stretch Film contains similar properties and is a great option for bundling items or wrapping pallets in static-sensitive environments.
