Evaluation of Used CorrLube Engine Oil 15W-40
Background: Customer wants to know if CorrLube 15W-40 still contains the corrosion inhibitor after 47,000 miles running in a diesel engine.
Purpose: To evaluate corrosion protection provided by used CorrLube 15W-40.
Method: ASTM D 1748 (Humidity Cabinet)
Materials: CorrLube 15W-40 oil sample after 47000 miles running in the diesel engine;
Castrol RX Super Heavy Duty Multigrade SAE 15W-40 Motor Oil;
Panels (Carbon Steel, SAE 1010 and Copper);
Methanol, Lab. Grade.
Procedure: Panels were washed with methanol and air-dried. Oils were applied on the panels by eyedropper. Panels were left for 2 hours after application in vertical position for dripping and then placed in humidity cabinet. Panels were inspected for any sign of corrosion at the regular basis. Castrol RX SAE 15W-40 Motor Oil was used as ‘Control’.

Conclusion: Used CorrLube 15W-40 after 47,000 miles running in a diesel engine provides excellent protection to Carbon Steel and Copper. Time before corrosion started on the panels treated with used CorrLube 15W-40 is close to that for new CorrLube 15W- 40. At the same time corrosion on the panels protected with similar oil without corrosion inhibitor - Castrol RX SAE 15W-40 started much earlier.
These data confirm that corrosion inhibitor in CorrLube 15W-40 is still very active, even after 47,000 miles running in the diesel engine.
