Oil compatibility tests for Lycoming Engines
Background: Lycoming Engines currently uses VpCI-322 as a corrosion inhibitor in their Test and Preserve oils. They would like to use a different corrosion inhibitor with their oils.
Purpose: Determine compatibility of M-529 with the Test and Preserve oils utilized by Lycoming Engines.
Materials: M-529
Castrol Brayco # 481, MIL-C-6529
Exxon Aviation Oil # 100 MIL-L-6082
FMC Durad # 125
Aeroshell # 65 MIL-L-6082
Method: Standardized Compatibility Test
Procedure: The following samples of oil were created:
After properly mixing the samples, they are thermally cycled. 8 hours in a refrigerated state near 0° C followed with 16 hours at 50° C constitutes one cycle. The samples are periodically examined during testing and cycled 3 times, after which they are removed and a report is written.
Ok = fully miscible and no precipitates
Test Oil, samples A-C
Preserve Oil, samples D-G
Conclusion: M-529 is compatible with the Test and Preserve oil provided by Lycoming Engines.
