Determination of Concentration of VCI-329 and VCI-326 in Mineral Oil
Background: The customer would like to have an analytical method to determine the concentration of VCI-329 and VCI-326 in Mineral Oil.
Purpose: Determination of acid numbers of Mineral Oil containing VCI-329 and Mineral Oil containing VCI-326.
Materials: VCI-329
VCI-326
White Mineral Oil
Toluene lab grade
Isopropyl Alcohol (anhydrous)
Methyl Orange Indicator manufactured by Mallickrodt
Barium Hydroxide manufactured by J.T. Baker Chemical Company
p-Naphtholbenzein Indicator Solution manufactured by Mallickrodt
Method: ASTM D-974 (Standard Test Method for Acid and Base Number by Color-Indicator Titration)
Procedure: Solutions were prepared according to parts 7.1-7.8 of ASTM D-974
-
- 0.1M HCl in water
- 0.1% Methyl Orange Indicator in DI water
- 1% p-Naphtholbenzein Indicator in titration solution
- 0.1M KOH in Isopropyl Alcohol with 2 grams Barium Hydroxide
- Titration solvent: 500 mL Toluene + 5mL Water + 495 mL Isopropyl Alcohol
- To determine the Acid/Base numbers, in the Case of VCI-329 20 grams of oil was used, in the case of VCI-326 2 grams was used, each oil was added to 100 mL of Titration Solvent with 0.5 mL of indicator added to the solution
Determination of acid/base numbers was carried out according to part 9 and 10 of ASTM D-974.
Results: When Methyl Orange Indicator was added to the titration solvent/sample of VCI-329, the solution remained orange meaning that the solution has no base number.
Amounts of 0.1 M KOH to neutralize 5, 10, 20% of VCI-329 in Mineral Oil were determined and a calibration curve of % VCI-329 versus mgKOH/g was obtained.

When Methyl Orange Indicator was added to the titration solvent/sample of VCI-326, the solution turned light yellow. The addition of 0.1 M HCl changed the color of the solution to pink-orange.
Amounts of 0.1 M HCl to neutralize 5, 10, 20% of VCI-326 in Mineral Oil were determined and a calibration curve of % VCI-326 versus mgKOH/g was obtained.

Conclusion:
1) The concentration of VCI-329 and VCI-326 in mineral oil can be determined by evaluating the acid number in its solution according to ASTM D-974.
-
- It is required that the calibration curve be determined in the mineral oil the customer is using.
