A High Performance DTM Coating without the Hassle of 2K Primer/Topcoat Systems
June 28, 2021
When choosing a protective coating for metal surfaces, many factors come into play. One of the first requirements is to ensure good adhesion with a direct to metal (DTM) primer. Sometimes, though, workers do not have enough time, budget, or patience to apply both a primer and a topcoat. The good news is that painters can still get good corrosion protection with Cortec’s VpCI®-375 DTM coating, without the extra hassle of a full-fledged traditional coatings system.
Convenience and Corrosion Protection
VpCI®-375 is a DTM coating that offers many advantages for those following the path of least resistance to corrosion protection via coatings. Rather than applying a primer, waiting for it to dry, and then adding aMtopcoat, users can apply one 3-4 mil (75-100 μm) DFT coat of VpCI®-375 directly to the metal and be done. Since VpCI®-375 is one-component (1K), there is no extra effort and mess required to mix a 2K system before painting, either. After use, any excess VpCI®-375 can be stored in the container instead of throwing it away, as unfortunately must be done at the end of the day for any unused 2K coatings. Compared to solvent-based coatings, cleanup of water-based VpCI®-375 is easier and VOCs are typically lower, coming in at 0.68-0.8 lbs/gal (81.3-96.0 g/L).
Positive Performance Features
VpCI®-375 provides a fast-drying thixotropic coating that is resistant to sagging or running, forming a tough protective barrier. With a complex mixture of corrosion inhibitors, VpCI®-375 displays excellent salt fog resistance. It shows good adhesion to multiple substrates (including carbon steel, copper, and galvanized steel) and offers UV resistance to prevent cracking or chipping upon prolonged exposure to sunlight in outdoor applications. VpCI®-375 is ideal for applications that require a medium gloss (50 max), but not a high gloss. It offers a pencil hardness of H when fully cured.
Greater Flexibility
VpCI®-375 is just one of many options designed to provide coatings users with a range of Micro-Corrosion Inhibiting Coatings™ solutions for greater flexibility. VpCI®-375 can be used standalone or combined with other topcoats for enhanced protection. If desired, VpCI®-375 can serve as its own two-coat system: one coat of VpCI®-375 applied direct to metal as a primer and the second applied as a topcoat. VpCI®-375 can also be used as a DTM primer along with an EcoShield® 386 topcoat for a high-gloss finish.
Where corrosion protection is needed and coaters want to keep it simple by using a one-coat, 1K system with medium gloss, VpCI®-375 is an excellent go-to in terms of convenience, performance, and water-based benefits. Learn more about VpCI®-375 here: https://www.corteccoatings.com/product/vpci-375/
