Sustaining Equipment, Sustainable Farming – The Circular Economy for Irrigation and Corrosion Protection

June 17, 2025

Sustainability is about more than using renewable products. It’s also about conserving resources. When it comes to farming, that includes protecting costly center pivot systems used to irrigate renewable crops. The fun part is that Cortec® is here to help sustainability come full circle by offering a USDA Certified Biobased Product to inhibit corrosion inside aluminum irrigation pipes—the same irrigation pipes that could potentially water crops destined for use in your next USDA Certified Biobased Product! The name of that possible missing link to close this “circular economy” loop in agriculture? EcoLine® AL-Corr.

Corrosion Risks in Irrigation Systems

Aluminum irrigation pipes have a naturally corrosive internal environment from water that intermittently flows and leaves behind moisture residual. The risk of corrosion rises with groundwater that has high chlorides or sulfates. Repercussions could involve anything from slower water flow (due to clogging) to leakage or serious damage that requires repairs or replacements. With pivot systems costing tens of thousands of dollars, the preferred path is to minimize the need for repairs and help equipment last as long as possible.

Sustainable Corrosion Protection for Irrigation Pipes

EcoLine® AL-Corris designed to provide protection during both regular and intermittent water flow. Since it does not contain phosphates or nitrites and it is formulated with ingredients approved for personal care products and food packaging materials, EcoLine® ALCorrcan be added directly to the irrigation water at a rate of 250-500 ppm. In five weeks of immersion testing, it reduced corrosion by more than 90% compared with the control. Better still, EcoLine® AL Corrcontains 81% USDA certified biobased content, giving it the chance to close its own “circular economy” loop when used for the irrigation of renewable crops that will be made into biobased products.

A ‘Circular Economy’ That Benefits Your Bottom Line

Irrigation systems are indispensable to the abundance and diversity of today’s agriculture economy. Yet they are significant investments inherently at risk for premature deterioration. EcoLine® AL-Corrpresents a sustainable solution through corrosion protection with a high biobased content, allowing users to implement sustainability where it counts—not just for the environment but also for the farmer’s bottom line!
