Case History Spotlight #626: Automotive Tool and Die Preservation

March 26, 2024

Automotive Tool And Die Preservation An expensive new two-cavity auto interior P20 plastic-injection mold weighing 40,000 pounds (18,144 kg) needed corrosion protection for five to six weeks of shipment overseas to a client in Europe. The mold and die manufacturer chose to coat the mold cavity, core, and steel surfaces with EcoAir® Tool & Die Rust Preventative, a partially vegetable-oil based rust preventative that displaces water, provides a degree of cleaning action, and is easy to spray over large surface areas. A VpCI®-309 Pouch was placed inside the cavity for additional corrosion protection, and the entire mold was wrapped in MilCorr® VpCI® Shrink Film. The shipment was highly successful with no corrosion issues. The customer was happy with the ease of removing MilCorr® and not having to clean off the rust preventative. They requested the same method for future shipments. Furthermore, the costs of protection were significantly less than traditional greases and oils.
