CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Case History #613: Protecting Tagliamento Viaduct PT Strands
March 09, 2026
The reconstruction of the Tagliamento River viaduct in Italy included the creation of a 1.5 km (0.9 mile) dual carriageway made from pre-stressed reinforced concrete segments. This required corrosion protection of posttensioning (PT) cables in the period between their placement in the PT ducts and grouting. MCI®-309 was easily fogged into the PT ducts in order to form a protective molecular layer on the tendons. Little or no surface prep was needed before application, and flushing would not have been required before grouting, giving the contractor (the Tiliaventum consortium formed by Rizzani de Eccher and Impresa Pizzarotti) a low-labor method of corrosion protection that reduced exposure to corrosive elements.
