CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper: Easy Corrosion Protection and the ‘Circular Economy’ Unite!

February 10, 2022

Corshield 146 1 - Cortec Corporation VCI paper is one of the safest and easiest forms of corrosion protection and also has one of the lowest environmental impacts—especially when it comes to CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper with Eco-BioTechnology. This anti-corrosion packaging paper made by Cortec® Corporation is non-hazardous to users and the environment. At the same time, it replaces greasy oil-based rust preventatives with a dry biobased packaging option to protect metals from corrosion during storage and shipment.

How It Works
CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper works like any other VCI or VpCI® packaging material. Vapor phase
Corrosion Inhibitors coated onto the paper vaporize and fill the enclosed space with protective molecules
that are attracted to metal, where they form an invisible corrosion inhibiting barrier as long as the package stays closed. When the metal parts are unpacked, the protective layer evaporates, leaving the parts clean, dry, and corrosion-free. This technology has revolutionized the way metals are protected in an enclosed package and offers a variety of benefits to workers and the environment.

Worker Benefits
To begin with, user advantages are huge. No longer do workers have to oil parts or apply difficult-to-remove rust preventatives before sending metal components off on a truck or boat to the assembly plant or end user. They can simply wrap the part in CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper and place in a box. This saves time, eliminates cleanup hassle, and allows parts to be used immediately after unpacking. However, the most obvious advantage is corrosion protection, which can have an untold impact by avoiding unnecessary costs from rust claims, returned parts, and replacement/restoration activities—not to mention damaged customer relationships. CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper helps avoid these problems and more by combining corrosion protection and packaging into one easy step. For the ultimate VCI paper convenience, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper eliminates packaging guesswork by offering double-sided corrosion protection that works for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals:

Carbon Steel
Stainless Steel
Cast Iron
Aluminum Alloys
Copper
Brass (≤30% Zn)
Solder

Environmental Impact
In addition to being easy to work with, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper is one of the most environmentally responsible options on the market for corrosion protection of packaged metals. Cortec® takes the entire product life-cycle into account to make the circular economy a reality for CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper. First, CorShield® VpCI®-146 with Eco-Bio™ Technology is made from 100% recycled content paper. Secondly, CorShield® VpCI®-146 is a USDA Certified Biobased Product. It contains 92% USDA certified biobased content and is a qualified product under the mandatory
federal purchasing initiative of the USDA BioPreferred
® Program.* At the end of its lifecycle, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper can be recycled and repulped into new paper products. It is also commercially compostable per ASTM D6868.

Stick with the Basics
While there are many forms of corrosion protection to choose from, sometimes the most basic can be the best for everyone—workers, owners, customers, and the environment. Contact Cortec® to discuss whether this non-hazardous, environmentally responsible form of active corrosion
protection is suited to your metal packaging application. CorShield
® VpCI®-146 Paper passes NACE TM0208-2008. For a high performance variation with a double dose of VpCI® corrosion inhibitor coating, ask about CorShield® VpCI®-147 HP: https://www.cortecvci.com/contact-us/.
