Evaluation of the compatibility of VpCI 649 with Elastomers

Background: Customers would like to have the experimental data of compatibility of VpCI 649 with the elastomers.

Purpose: To evaluate the compatibility of VpCI 649 with elastomers.

Method: Compatibility test

Materials: VpCI 649

Elastomers: Dyneon - Fluoroelastomer, EPDM, Buna N, and Natural Rubber.

Procedure: In majority of applications, to provide sufficient protection VpCI 649 should be added into water at concentration level of 0.2% and working temperatures could vary from ambient to 50 -70oC. To be sure, that elastomers can not be effected by VpCI 649 in the field application and for acceleration, compatibility test was set up at more sever conditions.

    1. Solution of 0.5% VpCI 649 in tap water was prepared.
    2. The samples of listed above elastomers were measured with the ruler, weighed and immersed in jars, containing 0.5% solution of VpCI 649 in water.
    3. Jars were sealed and placed in the oven set for 70oC for 48 hours. After the test, samples of elastomers were rinsed with water, wiped with paper towel, and air dried over night. Than final weight and dimensions were determined.

Results: It was no change of the dimensions was found in all studied elastomers.

Elastomers weight change (0.5% solution of VpCI-649)

Material Dyneon** EPDM** Buna N** Natural rubber
0.5 % VpCI 649 -0.31 -0.30 -0.82 -0.64
Control* -0.31 -0.30 -0.85 -0.67

* Tap Water

**%of weight change (Ws-Wf)WsX100, where Ws - initial weight; Wf - weight after test.

Conclusion: VpCI 649 when added to water at working concentration levels and even higher does not effect elastomers. All detected weight changes of elastomers in solution, containing VpCI 649, are equal or lower than in tap water.
