Evaluation of Zerust Vapor Capsules Along with Cosmoline Rust Veto Aerosol Spray
Background: Roman Mueller/Ken Motsinger Associates, submitted Zerust Vapor capsules along with Cosmoline Rust Veto aerosol spray to Cortec Corporation for a corrosion inhibitor performance evaluation
Purpose: Evaluate the corrosion inhibitor protection offered by three different Zerust Vapor Capsules along with Cosmoline Rust Veto aerosol spray.
Method: Modified ASTM D 1748-83 (110 deg F, 100 % R.H.)
Sodium Nitrite Test
Materials: Environmental Chamber
6 one gallon jars
6 Carbon steel panels (Q-Panel SAE 1010 Carbon steel, ground both sides, 0.762 mm x 75.9 mm x 126 mm)
Zerust Vapor Capsule VC1-1 emitter
Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-1 emitter
Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-2 emitter
Cosmoline Rust Veto aerosol spray
Cortec VpCI-105 emitter
Cortec VpCI-101 emitter
EM Quant Nitrite test strips (Lot/Exp OC191325/Feb 04)
Procedure: The following was done.
- Zerust Vapor Capsule VC1-1 was attached to inside wall of a one gallon jar of which a carbon steel panel was hung from inside lid.
- Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-1 was attached to inside wall of a one gallon jar of which a carbon steel panel was hung from inside lid.
- Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-2 was attached to inside wall of a one gallon jar of which a carbon steel panel was hung from inside lid that was coated with Cosmoline Rust Veto aerosol spray.
- Cortec VpCI-101 emitter was attached to the inside wall of a one gallon jar of which a carbon steel panel was hung from inside lid.
- Cortec VpCI-105 emitter was attached to inside wall of a one gallon jar of which carbon steel panel was hung from inside lid.
(1), (2), (3), (4) and (5) were conditioned at room temperature for a period of 20 hours. After conditioning period, the one gallon jars were then exposed to modified ASTM D1748-83 (110 deg F, 100% R.H.) and observed daily for surface corrosion.
Results:
Modified ASTM D 1748-83 (110-115 deg F, 100% R.H.)

Conclusion: Cortec VpCI-101 emitter provided longer corrosion inhibitor protection than Zerust Vapor Capsule VC1-1, Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-1, Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-2 with Cosmoline Rust Veto aerosol spray applied to panel. Cortec VpCI-105 emitter provided longer corrosion inhibitor protection than Zerust Vapor Capsule VC1-1, Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-1, Zerust Vapor Capsule VC2-2 with Cosmoline Rust Veto aerosol spray applied to panel.
Zerust vapor capsules are constructed of polyurethane foam containing within, masterbatch pellets of Dicyclohexylammonium nitrite.
