Protection of Piping for California Customer
Background: Customer manufactures steel pipe and utilizes a solvent based rust preventative (RP) coating for corrosion prevention. Customer would like to utilize an environmentally friendlier product for protection of their products.
Purpose: Compare the corrosion protection of VpCI-391 to the solvent based RP currently utilized by customer.
Materials: Three sections of carbon steel piping
VpCI-391
Acetone
Methanol
VpCI-414
Method: Modified ASTM-D-1748 Humidity Test (120¡F, 95-100% relative humidity)
Procedure: The following procedure was followed:
1) The sections of pipe were delivered to Cortec coated with the RP current used by customer.
2) Two of the pipes were scrubbed using VpCI-414 and rinsed with Acetone, one was left as received.
3) One clean pipe was rinsed with methanol, and set aside as the control.
4) The additional clean section of pipe was coated with VpCI-391, applied using a Graco Bulldog conventional spray gun, at 1.0-2.0 mil DFT (25-50 microns)
5) The pipes were allowed to cure for 24 hours and were then placed in the Humidity Cabinet.
6) Periodically the sections were inspected, after 410 hours the pipes were removed, a picture was taken and a report was written.
Results: The following results were obtained:
Sample | Time to Failure (hours) |
Control | 48 |
Current Solvent Based RP | 144 |
VpCI-391 | Did not fail |
Note: Test lasted 410 hours
Conclusion: VpCI-391 is a superior corrosion preventative to the product currently in use by CSI for the following reasons:
1) VpCI-391 provided more than 3 times the length of corrosion protection as the RP utilized by customer.
2) VpCI-391 is water based and environmentally friendly unlike the solvent-based product currently in use.
3) VpCI-391 can be removed with an alkaline cleaner, such as VpCI-414, and does not require a solvent for removal.
