Cortec® MCI® Encourages Contractors to Plan Now for a Productive Summer Construction and Maintenance Season
Cortec® Corp. shares concrete solutions to avoid set time errors and enhance cleaning, maintenance, and repair strategies.
March 23, 2026
As summer construction season approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, Cortec® reminds contractors of important tools to navigate high temperatures and optimize concrete maintenance during this limited time frame. By selecting the right concrete admixtures, cleaners, and other maintenance materials, engineers and contractors can make a busy season more productive and less chaotic.

One of the biggest summer concreting challenges is accelerated set time from high temperatures. Adding calcium nitrite (CNI) admixtures for corrosion protection makes set times even faster, leading to difficult finishing and possible cold joints. In contrast, MCI® admixtures do not accelerate set time and sometimes delay it. MCI®-2005 NS (normal set) and MCI®-2005 (set retarding) should therefore stay top of mind for specifying engineers who want to support ready-mixers with improved workability and fewer complications.
Ashraf Hasania, MCI® Technical Sales Manager, points out that Migrating Corrosion Inhibitors can also be added later to make up for construction errors. “If summer pours went wrong resulting in reduced concrete cover, use MCI®-2020 to compensate for the lost durability.” This surface applied corrosion inhibitor (SACI) can be applied directly to the concrete surface after curing.
On the maintenance side, MCI® cleaners, repair materials, and maintenance products can streamline routine upkeep. This portfolio includes solutions for:
- Cleaning oil stains on sidewalks and parking structures: MCI®-2061 and MCI®-2062 rely on biodegradable surfactants and beneficial bacteria to break down hydrocarbons and organic oils (respectively) over time.
- Enhancing concrete repair mortars: Water-soluble MCI® Mini Grenades can be easily mixed into repair mortars for added corrosion protection.
- Optimizing water repellent applications: MCI® water repellents with SACIs offer dual protection against moisture/chloride ingress and rebar corrosion.
- Passivating rusty steel: CorrVerter® MCI® Rust Primer passivates tight rust and offers a convenient alternative to abrasive surface prep.
- Protecting windows and doors: MCI® Peel-Off Coating may be appropriate for some non-porous surfaces that need a temporary layer of protection during summer façade work or painting jobs.*
Construction season will soon move into high gear, which is why it is important to start planning strategies now that will streamline efforts and avoid unnecessary headaches this summer.
