Try the Cortec® Removable Coatings Advantage for Corrosion Preventative Maintenance and Layup!

June 3, 2021

Most people who think of coatings automatically picture the colorful permanent paint that goes on everything from vehicles to structural steel. However, there is an important, sometimes overlooked niche that Cortec® removable coatings fill in the course of corrosion preventative maintenance and layup around the globe.

Corrosion Preventative Maintenance

Pipe Line Gas And Structure Of Offshore Platform

Doing small routine acts of maintenance in the short run can be critical to helping equipment last longer and avoiding more serious problems in the long run. This is especially true of corrosion prevention, for which each VpCI® removable coating offers special benefits.

  • Inconspicuous Protection: VpCI®-391 is a fast-drying water-based temporary coating that provides a non-tacky, barely noticeable film for protection of metals in harsh unsheltered applications. One great use of VpCI®-391 is for annual preventative maintenance on heavy equipment in corrosive environments. For instance, VpCI®-391 is an excellent way to slow corrosion on barge loading equipment that can age quickly after just one year of hauling corrosive fertilizers or deicing salts. VpCI®-391 can also be used to keep surfaces corrosion-free prior to welding.
  • Peelable Protection: VpCI®-372 is another water-based removable coating. It can provide corrosion protection, masking, and resistance to physical abrasion on metal structures or equipment. When it is time to use the equipment again, the coating can be peeled off by hand and disposed as solid waste.
  • Spray Can Application: CorShield® VpCI®-368 is a solvent-based option that leaves a waxlike coating for heavy-duty protection of components like wind turbine base bolts. Those who prefer a wet-film coating for preventative maintenance can use CorShield® VpCI®-369, a low VOC (0.21 lb/gal [25 g/L]) oil-based option perfect for dual lubrication and corrosion protection of moving parts. Both removable coatings are available in aerosol form for easy spray application around the plant, shop, or worksite.

Go-to Solutions for Layup

Many of the same removable coatings have become trusted standbys for use in preservation and layup projects around the world. This is especially true for layup of oil and gas rigs, where CorShield® VpCI®-368 is commonly applied to exposed static metal surfaces, and CorShield® VpCI®-369 is a natural choice to protect and lubricate moving parts. VpCI®-391 is a great option for protecting equipment such as top drives and has been widely used right over painted equipment, handrails, and other structural steel for extra protection in the extreme corrosiveness of an offshore environment.

Great Alternatives to the Status Quo

High Quality Galvanized Steel Pipe Or Aluminum And Chrome Stainless Pipes In Stack Waiting For Shipment In WarehouseCortec® removable coatings are great alternatives to common temporary coatings due to their protective capabilities and ease of use. As one-component coatings, no extra mixing of multiple parts is required. The coatings can be applied by brush, spray, or dip. CorShield® VpCI®-368 rivals the protection of Cosmoline* as seen in lab testing and can be removed relatively easily with Cortec’s VpCI®-41x Series and power washing. Others are even easier to clean off, simplifying maintenance and helping to minimize time and labor required to bring preserved equipment back online
