Cortec® Participates in ‘Two Days Corrosion’ Conference (TDC 2024)

It was an honor for Cortec® Corporation to join Ferrimex (Cortec® brand representative in Chile) at the 5th edition of TDC, October 3rd-4th in Santiago, Chile. The event—organized by the University of Santiago (USACH), the AMPP Chilean chapter, and the Chilean Navy—attracted many corrosion experts from academia and various industrial sectors, along with members of the Chilean Military, Navy, and Air Force.
Dr. Alberto Monsalve, Vice Rector of the University of Santiago, who has been one of the pioneers and leaders of this initiative since 2018, opened the event. The main strategic objective of TDC is to promote connections between the academic and industrial communities whose primary purpose is to maintain and preserve industrial and military assets. To this end, the two-day conference offered 28 presentations—14 by universities and 14 by national and international companies—on topics ranging from oil and gas pipeline integrity to surface preparation technology and CP monitoring. Of special interest, one session presented an important update on the current Chilean development of “Hidrógeno Verde” (Renewable Hydrogen or Green Hydrogen), a technology in which the country is one of the world’s leaders.
Among other TDC sponsors, Dario Dell’Orto, Cortec® Vice President of International Sales, gave a presentation featuring the use of VpCI® inhibitors for the protection of pipelines in two international applications:
- ITALY (Porto Viro): Preservation of 1300 pipes in storage during the construction of a pipeline to connect the first LNG offshore platform in the Adriatic Sea to the Italian coast. A solution of VpCI®-609 was fogged inside each pipe and VpCI®-389 was used to protect the cutback. Subsequently, the pipes were “sealed” with VpCI®-126 Film.
- PERU (Cusco): 3000 pipes stacked for use in the construction of the Gasoducto Peruano Sur were cleaned and protected with VpCI®-418, VpCI®-609, and VpCI®-126. Moreover, 16 km (9.94 mi) of already welded (lingadas) pipes were protected by fogging with VpCI®-337. Afterwards, the pipes were closed with MilCorr® VpCIv Shrink Film, a special anticorrosion film.
Another highlight was the presentation by Dr. Enzo Tesser, Ph.D. Materials Engineering and Head of Shipbuilding Department for the Chilean Navy. Dr. Tesser gave a comprehensive overview of the Navy’s new ship construction projects. Their ultimate target is to have the majority of the Navy’s fleet fully built in Chile.
It is important to note that after five editions, TDC continues to demonstrate the success of its initiative to narrow the gap between industry and the academic world for the final advantage of end users. “Two Days Corrosion,” sixth edition, is already scheduled for fall 2025 . . . the fight against corrosion continues!
