An off-road engine assembly plant was receiving parts from around the world packaged in VpCI^®-126 bags. As of 2010, suppliers were still adding oil to the bags as a carryover from old specifications. This addition was unnecessary and contaminated the bags and plastic liners so they could not be recycled. After a Six Sigma Black Belt studied the project and Cortec^®Laboratories performed validation testing on using the bags without the oil, the manufacturer eliminated the oil and, around 2017, started sending these used bags to the Cortec^®Advanced Films (CAF) recycling center. There, they were processed into new VpCI^®film at a percentage that was able to meet quality standards. This saved the manufacturer several hundred thousand dollars per year just by eliminating the oil, simultaneously improving health and safety conditions. Additional benefits came from being able to reuse corrugated plastic liners and divert hundreds of thousands of pounds of plastics away from the landfill or incinerator thanks to a true “circular economy” program.
