Corrosion-Free Peace of Mind for Switchgear, JB, and MTB Export

April 12, 2024

Corrosion Free - Cortec Corporation The question of how to get switchgear, junction boxes (JBs), or main terminal boxes (MTBs) from point A to point B requires more than just hiring space on a truck or container ship. When shipping to international customers, manufacturers must find ways to protect sensitive electricals from hot, humid, salt-spray conditions that could cause corrosion during export or storage. Cortec® shares three simple ways to keep equipment corrosion-free until commissioning.

Step One: Protect Metal Contacts

Workers can spray terminals, copper breakers, and other uncoated metals with ElectriCorr VpCI®-239. This can be used as a cleaner/degreaser to remove dust or grime from manufacturing, and it can be left to dry as a very thin film that inhibits corrosion in aggressive conditions.

Step Two: Add VpCI
® Emitters

VpCI® Emitters are perfect for protecting multi-metal types inside an enclosed space. These devices come in a variety of forms and release Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors that adsorb on metal surfaces, creating a molecular protective layer. They can be dosed based on enclosure volume:

VpCI®-101 Device – Protects 1 ft³ (28 L)
VpCI®-105 Emitter – Protects 5 ft³ (0.14 m³)
VpCI®-111 Emitter – Protects 11 ft³ (0.31 m³)
VpCI®-308 Pouch – Protects 35.3 ft³ (1 m³)

Step Three: Shrink Wrap

The outside of switchgear cabinets and JBs or MTBs can and should also be protected by wrapping the entire cabinet in VpCI®-126 HP UV Shrink Film. This not only provides a physical barrier but also contains corrosion inhibitors that work in both the contact and vapor phase, actively protecting the metal exteriors of the boxes from corrosion.

Get Ready for Export

Export is an important phase in the industrial supply chain. By following the steps above, manufacturers can ship electrical enclosures through a variety of unpredictable conditions, get them to customers in like-new condition, and keep them that way until installation time. Contact Cortec® if you have more questions about protecting electrical cabinets or other metal goods from corrosion during shipment.
