New Cortec® CUI Inhibitor Earns USDA Certified Biobased Product Label

February 15, 2023

Cortec® is pleased to announce that it has earned the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product Label for CorroLogic® CUI Inhibitor Injection. This product marks two noteworthy achievements in that it (1) takes an advanced approach to a pervasive industry problem and (2) does so using renewable resources. As such, CorroLogic® CUI Inhibitor Injection is a must try solution for any industry that suffers from corrosion under insulation (CUI) and is looking for more sustainable methods of protection.

The CUI Problem
CUI is a longtime industry problem for insulated piping or surfaces, especially in the oil and gas industry. Condensation from wet and dry cycling, or moisture seeping unseen under insulation and compromised water barrier jackets leads to potentially serious corrosion problems. While most CUI failures take place between temperatures of 120 and 350 °F [50 and 175 °C], many insulated piping systems reach temperatures above 347 °F (175 °C) at some point during operation, necessitating a corrosion inhibitor that can withstand these high temperatures. Another challenge is the extra time and labor typically required to remove insulation before applying most CUI treatments.

The Newest CorroLogic® Solution
Cortec’s new CorroLogic
® CUI Inhibitor Injection addresses both requirements with a 100% Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor that is stable up to 662 °F (350 °C). It can be injected directly into and migrate through insulation, forming a protective molecular layer on metal surfaces to which it is attracted. This layer is also extremely hydrophobic, providing added moisture resistance. As if these two benefits were not enough, the product was developed using renewable feedstock as a reflection on Cortec’s commitment to environmental responsibility. New Cortec® CUI Inhibitor Earns USDA Certified Biobased Product Label.

Third-Party Verification of Biobased Content
Third-party verification for a product’s biobased content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred
® Program,* which strives to increase the development, purchase, and use of biobased products. The USDA Certified Biobased Product Label displays a product’s biobased content, which is the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source, such as plant, animal, marine, or forestry feedstocks. Utilizing renewable biobased materials displaces the need for nonrenewable petroleum-based chemicals. CorroLogic® CUI Inhibitor Injection comes in with top renewability marks as a product that contains 100% USDA certified biobased content.

“We applaud Cortec® Corporation for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label,” said Vernell Thompson, USDA BioPreferred® Program. “The label is intended to help spur economic development, create new jobs, and provide new markets for farm commodities. But the label also makes it easier for consumers and federal buyers to locate biobased products and consider planet-friendlier options during purchase decisions.”
