Speedy Solutions for Shipping Ammo Corrosion-Free

July 8, 2020

With the fast rate at which guns and ammo have been flying off the shelves recently, it is important for ammunitions manufacturers to have a speedy way to add corrosion protection to each package as they rush to meet the demand. One excellent solution is to slip a piece of Cortec® VpCI® Paper inside each box. The paper releases Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors that work their way through the voids between the bullets and form a molecular protective layer on the surface of multiple metal types. When the ammo is taken out of the box, this invisible layer floats away, and the bullets can be used immediately.

Including this extra bit of “insurance” is especially important for bullets that may be shipped through uncontrolled environments subject to fluctuating temperatures, humidity, or tropical conditions that could lead to condensation corrosion and damaged cartridges—or potentially even spontaneous explosion in worst-case scenarios. An added benefit is that VpCI® Paper continues to provide protection even after the ammo reaches its destination and sits on shelves at the store or armory.

CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper is the industry’s premium corrosion inhibiting paper, offering corrosion protection on both sides of the paper, thus eliminating packaging guesswork. For applications where there is a greater concern about moisture ingress, ammo boxes can be lined with EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Paper, a recyclable moisture barrier paper. These two papers are especially good options for ammunition suppliers to the U.S. military since they meet minimum biobased content requirements under the mandatory federal purchasing initiative of the USDA BioPreferred® Program* (CorShield® VpCI®-146 contains 92% USDA certified biobased content, and EcoShield®VpCI®-144 contains 69% USDA certified biobased content). The papers do not contain nitrites, phosphates, silicones, chromates, or other heavy metals.
