CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Case History #679: Seasonal Boiler Layup at Alabama Theatre
March 19, 2024
The Alabama Theatre is a local landmark in Birmingham, Alabama. Once a showcase for Paramount Films, the 1927 structure was restored in 1998 and hosts many events for Birmingham citizens each year. In March 2020, the theatre temporarily shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic with hopes to reopen that fall.
Standard boiler layup at the theatre each spring involved adding desiccant. This time, the owners decided to try Boiler Lizard®, which actively protects against corrosion and does not need to be removed when the boiler is refilled. One Boiler Lizard® was divided in two and each half was applied to one of the two electric boilers that had been drained. This offered enough protection for 12+ months with the option for easy startup whenever needed. The theatre planned to use another Boiler Lizard® for regular seasonal layup the next year.
