CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Case History #376: Corrosion Mitigation at Alcatraz
January 04, 2023
The famous Alcatraz federal penitentiary is located on an island in San Francisco Bay and surrounded year-round by saltwater and fog that cause many corrosion problems for the National Park Service (NPS) managing the historical site. In 2008, with more than one million tourists visiting per year, the NPS knew it needed to take remedial action on the potential safety hazard posed by loose concrete on the high building walls. The need to remove the damaged concrete and slow corrosion was hampered by a limited budget and a small window of time in which to perform work due to the island’s role as a bird sanctuary.
Cortec® MCI® products provided a cost-effective solution that fit within these parameters. Workers removed loose spalled concrete and applied CorrVerter® to exposed steel. They also applied MCI®-2020 to the whole surface area to inhibit any underlying corrosion. The products were very easy to apply and allowed treatment of large areas to help with future cost savings.
