CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Case History #627: Winter Salt Cleanup for DOT Fleet
January 02, 2025
A metro area department of transportation (DOT) in the Midwestern U.S. identified corrosion on winter plow and deicing trucks as one of their most serious rust problems. The road maintenance vehicles returned from duty caked with chlorides in joints and underbodies. Such harsh conditions led to serious problems such as bolts coming loose and even driver’s seats starting to fall out of place. The DOT decided to try some corrosion inhibiting cleaners from Cortec® and settled on a custom diluted version of VpCI®-406 to wash their entire winter fleet—from salt trucks to highway patrol vehicles. Regular washing made a significant difference in the health of vehicle frames and bodies and is an important part of any preventative maintenance plan for vehicles in harsh winter environments.
