CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT #767: Mitigating Carbonation Corrosion
February 02, 2023
A 15-story building in Barcelona was being rehabilitated into an apartment complex with a parking garage. Unfortunately, carbonation had set into the concrete over time, reducing the concrete’s pH and leaving the steel reinforcement vulnerable to corrosion attack. MCI®-2021 was chosen as a water-repelling surface applied corrosion inhibitor (SACI) to counteract this concern. After inspection and surface prep, MCI®-2021 was applied over clean concrete walls, pillars, capital slabs, and waffle slab ribs to mitigate carbonation corrosion and extend service life. As such, MCI®- 2021 served as a key component in the rehabilitation process.
