CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Case History #627: Washing Deicing Salts off DOT Fleets

A Midwest U.S. DOT was hit hard every winter by corrosive deicing salts that led to vehicle rust. Snowplow
and deicing trucks took the brunt of the attack, returning from the job caked with chlorides in truck joints and underbodies. Over time, bolts would loosen and drivers’ seats would even start to fall through the floors due to corrosion. The DOT contacted Cortec® for corrosion inhibiting cleaner samples to reduce the amount of vehicle rust in hopes of helping their costly assets last longer.
In 2016, the DOT started using a custom version of VpCI®-406 to wash the department’s entire fleet. The
cleaner is added to their power wash dispensing equipment and provides a satisfactory level of foaming with no window streaking. Regular washing with VpCI®-406 according to recommendations makes a significant difference in mitigating rust on vehicle frames and bodies, and regular continued use will play an important role in delaying costly cab repairs or vehicle replacements.
