CASE HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Case History #679: Seasonal Boiler Layup at Alabama Theatre

March 10, 2022

Chs 679 - Cortec Corporation The Alabama Theatre was originally built as a Paramount Films movie showcase in 1927. It was restored as a local
landmark in 1998. In March 2020, the theatre temporarily shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with hopes of opening the next fall. Their normal routine was to add desiccant to the boilers for seasonal shutdown, but in 2020, they decided to use the Boiler Lizard
® instead. The two electric boilers were drained, and one half of the Boiler Lizard®
was placed in each based on boiler size. The water-soluble packaging was slit open to allow the Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors to diffuse and fill the enclosed boiler internals with protective vapors. When the theatre owners were ready to bring their boilers back online, they could simply refill the boilers as normal without having to remove the product, unlike desiccant. The theatre planned to use this convenient method with their second Boiler Lizard® for seasonal layup the next year.
